We've been winterizing our ponds and fountains. The pond should be covered with netting to keep the falling leaves and debrie out. The decaying debrie is poisonous to the fish. As it decays it sends of chemicals that will kill the fish. The debrie will also often clog up the pump.
Then we removed our plants. Some plants like the water hyacinth and lettuce we'll just throw away as they don't winter over. The tropical plants like the rushes, cannas, elephant ear, arrow and arum can be taken to the garage or basement (somewhere where they won't freeze).
We can still enjoy the fountain for awhile yet.
