Gift Suggestions

Still trying to figure out a gift for Aunt Mary or for another family member or friend? Well I guarantee they will love to have a fountain. There are many to choose from. There are fountains that sit on a table/desk, on a wall (they can be used inside or out) and standing fountains (also can be used inside or outside).

Water fountains – bring the soothing sounds of flowing water into the home, but they also bring a visual element. Not only are water fountains beautifully designed and able to complement just about any existing home decor, the water itself lends another dimension of stress relief to the equation. Watching the dance and trickle of water as it flows across rocks, down textured surfaces, and into a basin at the bottom enhances our auditory experience. When we listen to sound machines or audio recordings of nature sounds, we may feel the need to close our eyes to block out visual distractions around us that take our minds away from the goal of relaxation. In contrast, the visual attributes of water fountains bring us closer to that goal by giving us something beautiful and elemental to focus on with our eyes as we listen with our ears.

Water Fountains

The water that flows in a water fountain never sounds exactly the same from one moment to the next. This dynamic quality keeps our listening experience from growing monotonous or predictable, which can easily happen if we listen to sound machines or audio recordings regularly. We can also choose to dramatically change the “song” of the water in our water fountain, simply by rearranging rocks or other features in the basin or by adding a new element – such as a seashell, leaf, or small piece of wood – along the water’s path. We can even place our own fingers in the water’s flow to change the sound of the water as it moves; feeling the water stream across our skin would bring yet another sensory element to our experience.

Winterizing Our Ponds & Fountains continued

We've been winterizing our ponds and fountains. The pond should be covered with netting to keep the falling leaves and debrie out. The decaying debrie is poisonous to the fish. As it decays it sends of chemicals that will kill the fish. The debrie will also often clog up the pump.

Then we removed our plants. Some plants like the water hyacinth and lettuce we'll just throw away as they don't winter over. The tropical plants like the rushes, cannas, elephant ear, arrow and arum can be taken to the garage or basement (somewhere where they won't freeze).

We can still enjoy the fountain for awhile yet.

Bring Your Water Plants In

If you have topical plants in your pond, now is a good time to take them out. If you have time, it will also be a good time to repot them if necessary. Clean them up by removing dead leaves and blossoms. We put ours in the basement. We don't want them to freeze, but they will go dormant since it will be cooler for them.

Be sure that they drain, so they won't freeze up. Just keep them in the storage shed until spring.

Water Feature

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In landscape architecture and garden design, a water feature is any of a full range of fountains, pools, ponds, cascades, waterfalls, and streams. Prior to the eighteenth century they were usually powered by gravity, though the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon are believed to have been supplied by an archimedean screw. Other examples were supplied with water using hydraulic rams. Since the eighteenth century the majority water features have been powered by pumps. The power source was sometimes a steam engine but in modern gardens it is almost always electricity. There is an increasing range of innovative designs as the market becomes more established and people become more aware of the advantages of using solar power. These advantages include environmental benefits, no mains electricity in the garden, and free energy.A modern famous example is the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.Modern water features are often self-contained, meaning that they do not require water to be plumbed in; water is recycled from a hidden reservoir, also known as a sump. The sump can either be contained within the water feature, or buried underground (in the case of an outdoor water feature).
A water feature may be indoor or outdoor and can be any size, from a desk top water fountain to a large indoor waterfall that covers an entire wall in a large commercial building, and can be made from any number of materials, including stone, granite, stainless steel, resin, and glass.

A Traditional Fountain

From Wikipedia
A traditional fountain is an arrangement where water issues from a source (Latin fons), fills a basin of some kind, and is drained away. Fountains may be wall fountains or free-standing. In fountains sheets of water may flow over varied surfaces of stone, concrete or metal. Basins may overflow from one into another, or the overflow may imitate a natura lcascade. Many fountains are located in small, artificial ornamental ponds, basins and formal garden pools, and often they include sculpture. One of the most common features of a fountain, if there is enough pressure, is a jet or multiple jets, where water is forced into the air under pressure to some height.

Urn Water Fountain

While driving through the countryside I have noticed from time to time that more and more people are using Jars/Urns for their water fountains. While I have never seen a water fountain that was sold that way (it is possible that they are, I just haven't seen one in a store). Anyway I think it is a great idea! It kind of reminds you of ancient times when the young women carried similar urns of water from the nearby "spring" or "well".
These urns come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Some are tall and sleek with handles, while others a bit more round.

Or search the internet.....there really is a great selection if you have the time to search.
